Into the 21st century, painting is an ongoing river of creativity. It would be, ostensibly, difficult to imagine a wall without paint. When a thin layer of paint is applied to a wall it converts to an opaque solid film. So basically, what you see is what you get. But when you apply the Rag Rolling technique to your paint job, not only do you achieve a soft, textured effect on a wall, you even add depth and excitement to an otherwise bland surface. This article will explore the different techniques used in creating that lustrous, textured look that can only be achieved with rags.
Now let's get the terminology out of the way first. Rag rolling and ragging are two different things. Rag rolling is rolling or ragging paint on; and ragging is rolling or ragging paint off. The finished product is totally different, however. I'll cover this in a minute, but before I do, please make a note of this: to see the effect you like best, use a piece of cardboard to try out both methods.

Essentially, the principles of rag rolling and ragging are pretty much the same. What will create the difference between the two methods are the shape of the rag and the shape it creates on the wall. Between the two techniques, you will get the appearance of a vertical pattern with rag rolling, whilst ragging will appear sharper in texture-more arbitrary, if you will.

Preparation is easy. With both techniques, you'll want to ensure that the rags you use are wrung first before you apply the rag onto the base coat on the wall. It is important that all of the excess paint--or water in ragging--is removed from the rag if you want to get the best effect. Have several rags to work with, and pour glaze onto a paint tray where you will be dipping the rags into. Give them a good soak. You will be using one rag at a time, so place the extra rags in a bucket and place a lid over them to keep them moist.

Rag rolling paint on involves rolling paint onto the base coat. You need to use both hands to do this properly. The technique is simple: just roll the rag down from the top to bottom of the wall. When the impressions fade, get another rag from the batch you prepared earlier. Make sure you overlap each strip as you continue to roll.

Ragging paint on involves applying a soaked and crumpled rag onto an already glaze base coated wall. Ragging can create a scattered effect, thus in order to achieve a concentrated effect, overlap areas when you apply the paint. Dip the rag, wring it, and then dab it onto the wall. When the color gets lighter, just dip it again and continue dabbing.

Rag rolling paint off is a technique that involves working with a freshly glazed surface and simply applying a wet-with-water but wrung rag to roll the wet paint off. Use a clean rag once your rag gets saturated with paint. Simply apply glaze in small sections and continue rolling the wet paint off. If you want a more subtle effect, wet your rag with water and wring out before rolling paint off. Once the rag becomes saturated with paint, start again with a clean rag.

Ragging Paint Off is similar to ragging paint on, except in this technique you dab the paint off. For a more subtle effect, wet the rag, wring out the excess water, and crumple the rag. And when it's saturated with paint, use a clean rag.

Creating illusions of fabric, stone, wood and other natural surface materials can be easily achieved using faux paint techniques such rag rolling and ragging. It is the way you apply these techniques to the wall that determines the texture. Whether you rag on or rag paint off, you will get a textured look in the end, but to see the effect you like best, try using a piece of cardboard to try out both methods first.

An ordinary-looking wall can be easily transformed into something more chic and up-market with just the stroke of a brush ... and you wouldn't believe it, a comb. Commonly known as dragging, this technique can make a room seem immediately larger and less boxy. And it is one of the rare painting techniques that can in fact work extremely well when you get just the right color combinations in, to either contrast or blend in with the shades. This article will offer tips on how to use a comb and a brush to create utterly spectacular paint finishes that only dragging can effect.

If you want a tougher and finer finish, a base paint that is primarily a flat mid-sheen oil-based paint would help you achieve that remarkably well as it is non-absorbent, therefore the colored glaze would slide on easily, and won't sink in. Apply the glaze using a white brush 100 or 125mm [4 or 5inch] in width and generously bristled. Dragging on the other hand only needs a cheap standard brush 100mm [4inches] in width. However, use white spirit [mineral spirits] for thinning the glaze. Glycerin, from a chemist or druggist, may help to keep an emulsion wash malleable for a longer period.

Dragging works best with two people, one applying the glaze or wash, and the other one dragging it off; and while doing this the state of mind you should aim for is attentive but relaxed. Bristles should touch the wall firmly but lightly. Use rags to wipe dragging brush every couple of strokes or so to prevent it from becoming loaded with glaze ... you don't want to put color on instead of dragging it off! Allow transparent oil glaze a day or two to dry. Thinned paint dries faster although it doesn't produce quite the same crisp finish as transparent oil glaze. But it's easier to handle. Complete dragged wall with coat of clear matt or colorless acrylic varnish as a protection against wear and tear or washing down.

A comb is another tool that can create a magnificent dragging effect on a wall with relative ease. You can actually make your own comb by simply cutting a plastic lid in half, and then cutting V-shaped notches about ¼-inch long into the straight edge of a cut lid. Depending on the look you want to create, spacing between notches can be even or uneven, but to avoid excess paint buildup between notches, make teeth fairly narrow.

In both techniques, you work your way down the wall with brush (or the comb) from top to bottom... and some professionals even add side to side, then top to bottom again over the same strip. I'd say experiment with different ideas when applying these two techniques -- you never know what you will discover. Have fun with it!

Dragging is a faux-painting technique that produces thin, vertical stripes on the wall. It works best on wood paneling or a smooth wall surface. Colour Tips and Painting Techniques - Paler Shades and Highlights - What About Red?

I had a query about making paler colours and I thought it would be a good idea to discuss this topic in an article.

There are a couple of ways to get a paler colour when you are painting. These pale colours are normally for the highlighted areas or areas where the light is hitting the object you are painting.

1. You can paint a thin layer of paint and let the white of the painting surface show through. This works well as long as you are painting on a pale surface. Generally speaking you will be.

2. You can add white to the colour to make a pale version of it, called a tint. This works well except when you try to do it with red. Adding white to red will give you pink, which is probably not what you wanted! This was the main point of the question I received.

Highlights when using Red

When you are painting on a non-white surface you can paint the area of the highlight white, let it dry and then over paint with a thin layer of red to get the same effect as in Point 1 above. (This will work with other colours too.)

If you are trying to add a highlight, for example, to an area that you have already painted then let the paint dry before adding a thin layer of white to the area for the highlight. Use quite a watery mix if you want some of the red to show through. White is an opaque colour in acrylics and the area can look a bit chalky if the white is applied too thickly.

Or

An alternative method is to apply further layers of red to the darker areas of the object. When you add extra layers of paint the colour looks richer and deeper. These richer coloured areas will enhance the highlight effect in the area with just the one layer of paint.

Try this on a spare piece of paper; it is a very good effect. The highlight area has just the one layer of paint, and the middle and darker areas will have more layers of paint to give a richer colour.

If you go on to add shadow shades of red as well you will be able to achieve good results.
The shadow shade for red will depend on what you are painting. It could be a purple made by adding some blue. However if you wanted a more neutral look try adding a little of the complimentary colour (for red that would be green) to dull the colour down.

Maybe try using several techniques?

Of course you could use a mix of these different options too. Maybe a thin layer of white for the highlight, plus some extra layers of red to the middle tone areas and then some darker shadow tones. It will really depend on your subject and the effect you are trying to paint.

Painting for some people is a dreaded but necessary task. Others love the creativity that painting provides them and they don't mind getting a little messy while they do it. When buying paint, you get what you pay for. If you go for the less expensive brands of paint, plan on having to put down at least two coats. These paints are often thinner and will require more paint to get a good covering on your walls. They may also not spread as well, so you may need to consider the types of brushes or painting pads you are using. Paint brands that are slightly more expensive are often worth it. Their colors tend to be somewhat brighter and you can usually get a good cover with even one coat. Granted, some colors are going to require more paint to cover, but they typically tend to cover better and spread very well. You may also need to consider different types of paints if you are going to be getting creative with sponges, rags and other creative painting mediums.

When selecting colors you will first want to consider the lighting of the room. If you have a dark room, with little natural light then a dark paint will only make it darker. Brighten up rooms with light hues of blues or yellows. Avoid bright white as it shows dirt easily and may turn yellowish over time. A bright white will also make the room too white. You will find that lighter hues will make the room more relaxing and you may even find yourself spending more time in those rooms. Different colors can also bring your spirits up and brighten your mood. Darker colors may be very relaxing and possibly put you into a relaxing feel for a good nap.

Creative painting techniques can also add a bit of variety to a room. Sponges, rags and plastic bags can add creative style to any room. These are popular in rooms such as offices, living spaces and bedrooms. These techniques can also add a little contrast for texture to walls or use several complementary colors for a bright and creative feel. If you are interested in using these different types of painting styles, you will need at least two different colors of paint that complement each other. There are also paint additives available that will allow you to add texture such as sand to your walls for an even more interesting and creative design.

If you feel that you need a little something else in the room after painting, you may find that white crown molding around the top of your dining room adds an extra touch of sophistication. It even helps to hide those paint lines that weren't perfectly straight. Other ideas include wallpaper boarders that add an extra little touch of style and can blend well with room's theme. When using acrylic paint you can add layers of light colour to increase the definition of a pale area. However another option is to paint in the negative area to highlight the pale area.
This is a very good technique and can make your paintings more interesting. It is also an easy way to add detail to a flat area of colour.

Painting the area behind the object in this manner it gives you the chance to improve the shape of the object and gives the main object a more defined look.

What is negative space?

The negative space is the space left once you have ignored/removed an object.
There are a few classic negative space pictures. My favourite is two heads facing each other and the space between them giving the shape of a long stemmed glass. The negative space is the glass shaped area.

How to do it

Always try to contrast light and dark areas in a picture. When you have this kind of contrast it is easy to paint in some of the negative areas because one of the adjoining sections will be in a darker colour.
(I think that it is more successful to paint in negative areas with a darker colour, but if you want to try to use a lighter colour over a darker one be sure to use the paint more thickly.)
A landscape example could be to paint in a dark colour (behind a pale one) to make the top of the pale area jagged; this makes the pale area look more grass like.

In this example the darker colour was the negative area behind the grasses. Then blend the dark colour up into the negative space using water to thin it. By leaving a darker edge next to the pale colour you get a nice contrast too.

Use this technique

To add definition to any areas you feel needs it. It would be good for darkening the area to the side of a tree trunk and make the trunk stand out a bit more. Ideal for the trunk of a silver birch, just add some extra dark shades to the area at the side of the trunk to give the trunk more contrast and this helps to make the trunk more three dimensional too.
It is great for forest paintings as you can hint at more trees in the background without giving them too much detail.

Top Tip - the greatest contrast areas are always in the foreground of a picture. Make sure you have the contrast between the colours suitable for the distance in the painting, i.e. not too much contrast for areas in the distance.

Silhouette Art - Reverse Glass Painting - With Realism But Add A Touch Of Mystery

Silhouette art is what i would call a few of the reverse paintings on glass among the work I have done in the last few years, that seem to stand out among the others. The reason being that they are a little on the intense side, while at the same time, the background seems to melt away. Most, but not all of them, were done intentionally in this manner.

As an example for instruction, let us use the wolf on the skyline. There is not enough room in one article to explain the whole process, so I must assume you already know where to begin painting on glass. If not, please feel free to reference my previous articles with instructions. To begin the painting, you are going to put the last thing that stepped into the picture first.

Remember that the finished work is on the reverse side of the glass, so that will be the first thing to draw attention to the eye. What this means is that you will paint in the wolf first. Do not forget that he is howling. This means, (not really, but in the line in which you must be thinking) that he will have drawn a deep breath of air into his lungs, and straightened his spine to the extreme. There is very little light coming from the sunset, so the colors you will use in the wolf will be very dark, and not articulate. In order to get these colors, you can use a very small amount of black, but use more of the deeper colors, such as the darker reds, greens and blues, mixed together. Draw in the wolf, with your paint brush. Make him close enough to the front (bottom) of the painting, to be the center of attraction.

This is not to say, though, that he wants to be in the center of the painting. Now, to get those stray hairs around the throat and shoulders of the wolf, leave just the very smallest amount of paint on the brush. You may even need to wipe some of it off the brush with a rag. You will almost lay your brush vertically on the glass, with the bristled end, pointing outward from the wolf. Most of the brush will lay inside the wolf's body, with only the tip ends of the bristles extending over the edge of the wolf. I usually hold my breath while doing this, sometimes for much too long! While rolling the brush along the edge of the wolf, remember to make the bristles of the brush point in the same direction as the wolf's hair would. There will also be some vagrant hairs around the tail and feet. Wolves need a lot of padding on the feet, so they are hairy. Proceed in the same manner. Now, extremely important, you will need to let this dry before the next step.

Now that the wolf is dry, it is time to paint the next thing that went into the painting. That would be the earth. The ground he is standing on. Your wolf being sky-lined, the ground will only come up to his feet, or only slightly beyond. Remember this is at sunset, so there is not much light. Use the same colors you had for the wolf with dark brown or burnt umber this time. You may want more green in there, too. Just the facts of the landscape here. Keep in mind that the wolf is the subject. Paint in all of the foreground. Let it dry. The let it dry process can take form a few hours to weeks, depending on what types of paint you are using.

Now the time has come for you to finish the painting! This is an exiting part of it! I understand that the angels get to paint the sunsets, so it will not hurt to get some practice! A sunset should have the warm colors of the day in it, so use some bright red, and yellow, and white. Put them in first, in large patches down near the horizon. They are going to dilute as you paint in the night sky, so do not worry if there seems to be too much color. Paint around the reds and yellows with deep grey and a little blue. Now, paint right over the colors too, with the grey and blue mixed together in the brush. It is important to do the sky in one step, so that it all blends, and there are not any sharp edges left. The sky is soft. Think about that. Then, let it dry.

Now, turn the pane of glass over, set it on a counter top. Step back and view the masterpiece! I like it!

A Few Tips About Face Painting

There is no doubting the fact that face painting is very popular and more so for kids who love to have butterflies, cats, fairies, dogs, ghosts, witches and wizards painted on their faces. Value the Paint, and try to Visualize the end Product

The first thing to remember is that one ought to value one’s paint and buying manufactured face paints would be a lot cheaper than buying professional face paint or stage makeup. Secondly, one should use a sponge in order to apply the paint when thinking of covering a large area or putting a base color on.

One should also remain patient and allow the paint to dry before applying a second coat. Applying thin layers is preferable to applying one thick layer since thick layers are prone to crack.

One should also have a ready stock of tissues on hand as face painting requires a lot of wiping of the hands as well as brushes. Also, face painting is often messy, though fun, and baby wipes work faster and is also useful to clean up any mistakes along the way.

Painting a Room

Painting can be an enormously satisfying job for the result that you will see when you are finished. However, preparation is very important to ensure that there are no messy and hard to remove mistakes.

To prepare your room, remove everything, including curtains and blinds. If this is not possible push all furniture to the center of the room and cover it with old shower curtains or sheets. Cover the floors with tarpaulins or thick canvas.

Use masking tape to tape down your floor covering. Roll the masking tape out across the floor and the wall where you will be painting. Use masking tape also to cover any skirting boards, door or window frames. Masking tape can make your job so much easier, as you will end up with a good clean line when you peel it off. Just be sure not to wait too long after finishing your painting to peel it off as it can cause dried paint to peel.

Wash the walls using sugar soap. This will remove any grease or dirt. It will also help you identify any other imperfections which you may need to touch up. If previous paint is peeling, scrape the surface back and sand it until smooth. If there are any cracks, these should be filled using premixed filler and sealed using an acrylic sealer undercoat. Once this has been done, sand the walls until smooth and wipe away any dust with a dry cloth.

When choosing your brushes, be sure to check out all the options available to you which may make your particular situation easier. There are many different styles of brushes and in particular some which are designed for sliding along difficult to paint corners. Brushes and rollers should be chosen for quality, it can be quite frustrating trying to pick away loose brush hairs from your freshly painted wall.

Once you are certain that your surface is clean and smooth, you can begin painting. When applying the paint begin at the top of the furthermost corner from the door and work your way down and back. When using a brush, a diagonal crisscross pattern is the best, rather than straight up and down. Be methodical and pedantic to ensure that you get the most evenly spread surface. Be a perfectionist, fixing each problem as it comes up. Depending on the original colour of the wall that you are painting, you may need two or even three coats.

You may wish to experiment with a different paint finish. These are applied after your base coat. One popular paint finish is sponging. To do this dip a dried sea sponge into paint and dab it on the entire surface of the wall. Another method is rag rolling, where you apply paint rolling a paint covered rag across the wall. Combing can be quite effective, but requires some concentration and coordination. For this method cut even notches into the edge of a squeegee blade.

Paint a coloured glaze over your dried base color and draw the squeegee blade through the glaze. These types of finish are best achieved by two people working together, as you often need to work fast after the gloss has been added, before it has time to dry.

Wood chisels, there are many types for many purposes but they all have one thing in common; they need to be sharp. With proper care and appropriate storage you can insure your chisels will last to the next generation. With regular sharpening you can guarantee your chisels are always ready when they are needed. Although it may seam obvious, it is a point worth emphasize. Chisels can often be damaged when used on inappropriate materials. Always check that the material you are working on is free of nails, screws, and staples. Obstructions like that can easily put a nasty gouge in your sharp blade.

Also make sure the materials surface are is clean. Dirt and debris prematurely dull an edge. Any time your blade is damaged it will manifest its self in the finished surface of your work. Moisture is the enemy. There may be times when you can not avoid some moisture on your chisels.

Simply wiping off the excess water helps to prevent corrosion. However there are other times when humidity and condensation can be a problem and a simple wipe with a towel will not work. The solution is simple. Just keep a slight amount of oil on the surface of the blade.

The oil will prevent water from being in contact with the metal. Do not store your chisels loosely in a draw or toolbox. This is because the chisels are able to move around and collide into one another. Again, this leads to slight damage and to the cutting edge becoming prematurely dull. Instead, hang them up, use draw dividers, or purchase a caring pouch.

SharpeningA sharp edge is important for your chisels to perform properly. Without a properly sharpened edge you will take long to complete your work as well as the finished product will not be as nice. However, do not worry because sharpening is easy with the proper equipment and knowledge.

Materials needed:

- Sharping stones (in several grades of finish)

- Slip stone

- Oil

- Leather Strop

Steps:

1. Lubricate the sharpening stone; put a few drops of the oil on one of the rougher graded sharping stones.

2. Form burr edge; Hold the chisel at a 20 degree angle to the stone and glide the blade along the stone. Work both sides of the chisel evenly and gradually change to the finer grades of sharping stones.

3. Check the burr edge; Lightly dragging your finger away from the cutting edge. Should you be able to feel a slight roughness to the edge. When you do then you know the blade is ready for the next step, else you need to continue to form the burr edge.

4. Remove burr with slip stone; Using the slip stone like the other sharping stones hone away some of the burr so it is ready for the final polish.

5. Use leather strop to finish the edge and polish the blade; draw the blade across the strop away from the cutting edge until the burr has been removed.

6. Check for sharpness; rest the cutting edge of the blade lightly on your fingernail then if the blade catches slightly or feels sticky the blade is ready to use. Your chisels are now ready for years of use. Although it is not necessary, it is often fun to check your work.
