House Paint Colors - Planning Before the Plunge

By Rico Franco

Doing a repaint of the house is one of the most exhaustive, expensive, and exasperating projects to be done in the homestead, but it doesn't always have to be. Oftentimes, the troubles arise when the project is rushed into without any planning, survey of the area to be painted, and budget considerations. You get house paint colors you don't like, you pay too much, and then you realize all of the problems could have very well been avoided.

This is why it is important to have several things in mind before you plunge into a repaint project of your domicile. This will save you a lot of time, effort, money, stress, and the eventual headache.

Here are some considerations that you should help you plan ahead for your next foray into interior paint color combinations:

Room area - This is a pitfall a lot of first time do-it-yourselfers trip into on their first attempt in doing a paint job in their space. Take the time to actually know the measurements of the room or area you are painting. Knowing the measurements allows you to plan how much paint you need to buy and use.

Room dimensions - Depending on the actual size of the room, did you know you can actually generate the impression that a room is really bigger or smaller that it really is? Colors produce a subtle effect that has a way of changing how a room is perceived. Certain colors, like violet, green, or blue have the ability to make a room appear to be larger than it really is, although the darker aspects of the hues, such a hunter green and navy blue, have the opposite effect, making a room smaller. This is information is particularly useful if you would want to make a smaller room appear to be larger, and if this is the case, it would be good to invest in either light neutral colors, or even go all out white.

Ceiling Color - Very much the same can be done with the ceiling. A very large space in rooms is almost a rare thing to find in modern houses today, where maximization of space has become the primary thought, rather than having an actual large space. By painting the ceiling in either white or very light colors, the illusion of a high ceiling is achieved, adding to the apparent size of the room. Conversely, darker colored ceiling can make drawn in the space of a room, making it appear to be smaller.

Large surface area - When painting over a surface that is particularly large, most paint colors have a tendency to become actually darker than it really is. This has often puzzled many people, thinking the colors they purchased weren't the ones they wanted or the wrong colors were mixed. Truth is, it's the right color, it just so happened this is how paint looks like when spread out over a large surface area. A good idea would be to pick wall paint colors that are somewhat lighter than the shade you had originally intended. Add to this the surrounding colors in the room, like that of the furniture, large fixtures, light sources, etc.
